How COVID-19 mortality rates vary by blood type?
Is there a correlation between blood types and death rates to COVID-19 infected patients?
As the pandemic has been spreading there is more and more data available now that indicates that death rates among COVID-19 patients varies by blood type.
I created below visualization with two charts. Selecting countries by death rates shows their populations’ aggregated blood type distributions.
Below is an explanation on how these charts indicate the correlation:
When groups of countries are selected by their death rates, it is clear how the countries with low, average and high death rates have corresponding low, average and high blood type A populations. Below are the observations:
1) With no country(s) selected in chart 1, the default blood type distribution is as below:
O = 44.2% | A = 33.39% | B = 17.01% | AB = 5.25%
2) By selecting countries with death rate 1 and below, the average blood type distribution is as below:
O = 48.99% | A = 25.87% | B = 20.27% | AB = 4.84%
3) By selecting countries with death rate above 1 and below 10, the average blood type distribution is as below:
O = 43.61% | A = 34.59% | B = 16.50% | AB = 5.44%
4) By selecting countries with death rate 10 and above, the average blood type distribution is as below:
O = 45.60% | A = 39.68% | B = 10.63% | AB = 4.09%
5) By selecting countries with death rate 12.33 and above, the average blood type distribution is as below:
O = 42.40% | A = 41.00% | B = 11.62% | AB = 4.98%
Blood type A is clearly increasing for countries with higher death rates
The below screenshots further support this correlation.
